THE controversy over the remarks of Taiwanese singer Rainie Yang that she is Cantonese and “eating seafood in Taiwan was a luxury” continues to rage, reported Sin Chew Daily.
After her comments upset Taiwanese social media users, former Girl’s Team member Peggy Wang defended Yang and asked why “Taiwanese tend to bully their own people”.
Taiwanese director Issac Wang retaliated by saying that it was the 38-year-old singer who had bullied workers in the industry.
Wang alleged in a social media post that Yang would treat workers on the set and producers in Taiwan differently than those in China, where she would be more “obedient”.
“This is what we really call Taiwanese bullying their own people. She made a lot of people angry. They were made to chauffeur her and even her manager had to do it.
“She is not really old but she behaves arrogantly. She has done all the things detested by workers in the entertainment circle,” he said.
In response, Yang’s manager, Su said the singer would not comment on any unverified statements from anyone whom she did not know or work with.
Last week, a video clip from the Journey of the Poetic Soul programme shown on China’s Zhejiang TV had Yang saying that she rarely ate seafood during her childhood in Taiwan due to her family’s limited finances.
She said although she grew up in Taipei, she is actually Cantonese.
> Singaporean director Jack Neo has to act in the movie he is directing, King of the Musang King, because the actor who was supposed to play the part cancelled at the last minute, reported Kwong Wah Yit Poh.
The 62-year-old also joked that he would have to dye his hair grey to “look old” for the role.
Filming of the movie will take place in Pahang. It stars award-winning Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann and Neo’s longtime Singaporean collaborators Mark Lee and Henry Thia.
